How does a telescopic pool enclosure work?

A telescopic pool enclosure consists of several independent and mobile modules. These modules are of increasing size and width to enable them to nest into each other when you open the enclosure.

These modules are mounted on rollers that may be guided by rails fixed on the deck around the coping or on the terrace to enable swimmers to slide them easily to open the pool. The number of modules of a telescopic pool enclosure varies according to the length of the swimming pool.

Each module generally measures 2 m in length, so the larger the pool, the greater the number of independent mobile parts. A telescopic enclosure can have various heights, depending on your needs and wishes.

You can, for example, choose a low-profile or flat pool enclosure, which protects the pool water while remaining discreet and economical. To fully benefit from your pool and to bathe despite poor weather and in all seasons, a mid-height telescopic pool enclosure may be the ideal solution. A full-height telescopic enclosure will enable you to create a true aquatic space and even to install a solarium and a wellness area if you wish.

What are the differences between a telescopic enclosure and a removable pool enclosure?

Like a telescopic pool enclosure or a sliding pool enclosure, the removable pool enclosure consists of several parts.

However, these are not stackable and cannot move on rollers and rails to open and close the enclosure according to the season and the weather. Indeed, the modules of a removable pool enclosure have the particularity that they can be lifted on one side and maintained in the open position thanks to struts, like the bonnet of a car.

These modules are independent from each other. The pool enclosure can thus be completely removed, which is a real advantage when you want to totally uncover the pool to fully enjoy summer bathing.

Despite their differences, telescopic pool enclosures and removable pool enclosures both enable you to protect your swimming pool from debris and algae.

Your pool water will in all cases be preserved from harsh weather and debris, like dust and dead leaves. The enclosure enables you to maintain a pleasant temperature in and around the pool for the comfort of users.

Thanks to the greenhouse effect, the pool enclosure even enables you to gain a few degrees of temperature while protecting bathers from UV rays.

Lastly, all models of pool enclosures, both telescopic and sliding, must respect the French NF P90-309 standard. This ensures that you and your family can enjoy your pool with total safety, because children and toddlers cannot access the swimming pool without being accompanied by their parents or an adult.

The advantages of a telescopic enclosure

Pool enclosures with a telescopic opening offer numerous advantages, which explains their success in France. Indeed, telescopic enclosures have the advantage of:

  • Opening entirely: thanks to their system of several nesting modules, telescopic pool enclosures take up very little space when open. The pool can even be entirely uncovered by installing a deck extension at one of the extremities of the pool. This enables you to fully enjoy your in-ground pool in the peak season.
  • Adapting to your wishes:  as all the modules are mobile and independent, you can choose to use the opening and closing system on the right, left or in the centre and uncover the pool area of your choice with partial opening.
  • Being easily manipulated: thanks to their rollers, with or without a ground rail fixed to the deck or terrace, the modules of a telescopic enclosure can be pushed very easily. For greater comfort, it is also possible to motorise telescopic enclosures, which enables fast and automatic opening and closing thanks to a simple press of a button on the remote control.
  • Existing in numerous customisable models:  by choosing a telescopic enclosure, you give yourself the opportunity to choose among various heights (low-profile, mid-height and full-height), various dimensions, as well as different shapes (curved, dome or angled) and different materials for both the structure (aluminium or wood) and for the walls (honeycomb polycarbonate, single- or double-glazing) because this type of product is generally made to measure to adapt to your needs and wishes.

Telescopic pool enclosures: the disadvantages

Before launching the project to cover your pool with a telescopic pool enclosure, you should note that this type of enclosure has certain inconveniences. Each project must therefore take the following particularities into account:

Telescopic enclosures are more expensive than other models because they are high-end products that are often made to measure with quality materials. Thus, it is not the most economical option to cover your swimming pool, especially of it is motorised.

Some models of telescopic pool enclosures require a little space, so you need a deck with sufficient surface area around the pool to install them.

Although a telescopic enclosure can effectively cover all shapes of pool, its modules must be able to nest into each other. It can thus accommodate the shape of most pools, but cannot perfectly follow the curves of a bean-shaped pool, for example.

Depending on its height and surface, the installation of a telescopic enclosure may require certain administrative procedures to file a declaration of works or obtain a building permit before starting construction.

Materials for telescopic pool enclosures

You can choose to install a telescopic enclosure with an aluminium, wood, steel or PVC structure over your pool.

Each material has its advantages and disadvantages:

  • The aluminium telescopic pool enclosure: this is the most common model because aluminium is easy to maintain and solid enough to withstand harsh weather, with customisable heights and colours to obtain a design that suits you.
  • The wooden pool enclosure: recognised for its noble and natural aesthetics, wood provides optimum insulation and can be very solid when well maintained. It nevertheless requires particular care, which must be adapted according to the species and may be quite expensive.
  • The steel pool enclosure:  especially used for the structures of large, full-height enclosures, steel has the advantage of being highly resistant and gives the pool enclosure a certain aesthetic appeal. However, it requires regular maintenance to prevent corrosion and rust.
  • The PVC pool enclosure: this is a light and economical material that can be used for both the structure of the enclosure and its walls.

Less common than aluminium for the structure or honeycomb polycarbonate for the wall glazing, it does not win everybody's vote for its aesthetic appeal.

The maintenance of a telescopic pool enclosure

Like all pool enclosures, telescopic enclosures require regular maintenance to remain in good condition and to extend their service life. It is recommended to clean your telescopic pool enclosure twice a year, before winterising and at the beginning of the peak bathing season.

To maintain the structure (aluminium, wood, etc.), glazing (glass or plexiglas) and the walls, you should avoid the use of pressure washers and abrasive sponges, which can cause scratch marks.

Ideally, use warm water with non-aggressive soap, soft cloths and a squeegee. Once you have finished cleaning, rinse the pool enclosure with clear water. You should also regularly clean the rails and the deck around the pool to ensure that opening the telescopic enclosure remains easy, fluid and effortless.

To do so, you can remove dirt, dust and dead leaves with a broom before greasing the equipment again. Don't forget that it is essential to adapt the maintenance to the materials used for the structure and the walls of the telescopic pool, because each has its own characteristics and qualities.

What is the cost of a telescopic pool enclosure?

The price of a telescopic pool enclosure varies according to several criteria, such as the materials, including wood, aluminium, PVC, honeycomb polycarbonate or glass, but also the size or the shape of the enclosure.

According to professional websites, the price range for a telescopic pool enclosure is between  €7,000 (for a low-profile pool enclosure) and   €25,000 (for a premium top-end enclosure).
