What is a pool veranda?

A pool veranda has several particularities. First, it is a type of large pool enclosure. Like any living space, it necessarily has quite a high minimum ceiling height and rather large ground coverage. Thus, bathers can comfortably swim and have fun in the water, but can also circulate freely on the deck around the pool. It is also a fixed structure. Its wooden, aluminium or steel posts, and its glass or polycarbonate roof and walls, cannot be moved. Lastly, a pool veranda is a lean-to pool enclosure. Thus, it is supported by one of the walls of your house to create a new living space that is connected to your residence, like an extension to your house.

What are the differences between a pool veranda and a pool enclosure?

There are several differences between a pool enclosure and a pool veranda:

  • Modularity and the opening system: a pool enclosure can be sliding, telescopic or lifting. It then consists of several modules that slide on rails or rollers, or are lifted to partially or completely open the pool enclosure. Some models of pool enclosure can even be removable. These can be removed to completely uncover the pool during the summer season. As it is a fixed enclosure, a pool veranda is less modular and the customisation of the opening system remains limited.
  • The location: the place where your pool veranda or pool enclosure is to be installed will depend on the location of your swimming pool. An independent pool enclosure can be installed anywhere in your garden or property. A pool veranda is a shelter that adjoins the residence and is a true extension to your home. It must therefore be installed near one of the walls of the building.
  • Adaptability: a low-profile, mid-height or flat enclosure, with a telescopic or lifting opening system – an independent pool enclosure leaves you the choice of the height and the opening system. A pool veranda is a type of fixed, full-height enclosure that is less adaptable, but which remains a comfortable, high-end pool enclosure.

The advantages of a pool veranda

Optimal comfort

Measuring over 1 m 80 in height and with a significant surface area, a pool veranda is a full-height enclosure that enables you to fully benefit from your aquatic space. You can bathe, swim and play in the swimming pool year-round and in any season, while remaining protected against poor weather. You may also decide on rather large dimensions to be able to cover part of your terrace. In this way, you will create a true living space, with garden furniture, for example. By adjoining your residence, a pool veranda gives you the opportunity of direct access from the interior of your house to your pool, enabling you to bathe directly with no need to go outdoors. For all these reasons, a pool veranda is considered as a high-end enclosure that offers a very high level of comfort.

The safety of the pool and bathers is ensured

Like all pool enclosures marketed and installed in France, pool verandas are certified NF P 90-309. This ensures you that the veranda presents no risk to bathers and that it effectively secures the swimming pool. To meet this French standard, pool verandas must fulfil several criteria:

  • The opening system must not be accessible, or must be too complex to be handled by a child without the help of its parents or an adult, to prevent any risk of drowning
  • The elements of the veranda must present no risk to users, and must not risk injuring them by cutting or pinching, for example
  • The structure, roof and glazing of the veranda walls must withstand a snow load of 45 kg per m2 and gusts of wind up to 100 km/h.

Easy pool maintenance

A pool veranda provides a real advantage with respect to the maintenance of the pool and its equipment. The installation of a veranda over your pool will effectively protect the different equipment and materials, the pool water and the coping from harsh weather and debris, such as dust and dead leaves. The maintenance of your covered pool will thus be greatly simplified, saving you time and energy.

Fine aesthetics

The design of your pool veranda can entirely adapt to the style of your house, whether it be traditional, modern or contemporary. Often made to measure, this wall-supported pool enclosure can be made of various materials, including wood, aluminium or steel, and several colours are available. Installing a pool veranda in your home can thus bring additional charm to your house. A veranda is a construction with elegant architecture that can provide true aesthetic added value that fully matches your tastes and wishes.

Pool verandas: what are the constraints?

Humidity, the enemy of the pool veranda

Of course, an aquatic space cannot exist without humidity. The installation of a pool veranda is conducive to evaporation and condensation. It is therefore essential to take all precautions from the beginning of your project to effectively combat constant humidity. It can be unpleasant but also, and above all, it can damage certain materials and equipment. For this reason, it is necessary to provide for an effective ventilation system and to choose durable materials.

Insulation, an aspect not to be neglected

A pool veranda is a lean-to pool enclosure that can become a room that is a true part of your house. Nevertheless, it is a space that faces the exterior and which does not benefit from the insulation provided by block or concrete walls. For good thermal and acoustic insulation, it is thus necessary to choose materials that are recognised for their insulating properties. You can choose among several materials, such as wood for the structure, or glass double-glazing for the walls to ensure optimum insulation.

Pool veranda materials

You can choose among various materials for the structure of your pool veranda. Each of them has its own characteristics:

  • Steel: the vintage but timeless style of steel is sought after by many people. You should, however, note that steel is sensitive to humidity and that it is necessary to apply a suitable treatment to prevent corrosion and rust.
  • Wood: this noble and elegant material is recognised for its attractive appearance and insulating properties. Its price varies considerably according to the species.
  • Aluminium: economical and durable, aluminium is the most popular material for the construction of pool enclosures. Nevertheless, it is a thermal conductor, which limits its performance in terms of insulation.

Pool veranda maintenance

The maintenance of a pool veranda is not particularly demanding. As a general rule, it is primarily a question of regularly cleaning the structure and glazing with non-abrasive sponges and soapy water to keep the walls transparent and prolong the service life of the veranda. Ideally, it should be cleaned once a month, but it is recommended to always keep a cloth close at hand to clean dirt whenever it appears. Certain materials, however, require special annual maintenance, like steel, which requires anti-rust treatment.

What is the cost of a pool veranda?

The price of a pool veranda, a bespoke product that adapts to both your wishes and needs, depends on several elements:

  • The dimensions: height and surface area;
  • The materials used: aluminium, wood or steel for the structure, polycarbonate or glass for the glazing
  • The options chosen.

The price range is therefore quite large, with costs between €25,000 and €100,000.

The essential accessories for a pool veranda

To fully benefit from all the comfort that a pool veranda can bring you, two accessories seem essential:

  • An air dehumidifier: this will prevent condensation due to the evaporation of pool water, and thus enable you to enjoy healthier air while increasing the service life of the veranda and other equipment.
  • Heating: the essential option to maintain both the water and the room at a pleasant temperature, and to benefit from your aquatic space year-round, regardless of the weather.
